•         A skill, concept or (rarely) product
•         Clear to students and teachers
•         Observable, measurable
•         Specific
•         Concise
•         Mapped to appropriate standards
•         Grade-level appropriate
•         Do-able, achievable
•         Demonstrable through a variety of contexts and methods
•         Necessary for success at the next level
